To get to Shinjuku Takashimaya, the closest exit from JR Shinjuku Station is the Miraina Tower ticket gate, and you can also access it from the New South ticket gate and the Southern Terrace gate.
The New South ticket gate is marked by the yellow sign in the photo below!

Inside Shinjuku Station, follow the signs for "Miraina Tower ticket gate" or "New South ticket gate".
Then, after exiting the ticket gates, proceed towards the NEWoMan entrance, and you'll see the JR side entrance on the 2nd floor of Takashimaya.

The area around the Takashimaya entrance has a terrace-like feel, with a spacious, roofed entrance.
And there were plenty of places to sit and take a break!

Tada! A large number of wooden benches have appeared, creating a rather large resting area.
The glass ceiling gives a sense of openness, making it perfect for a break in Shinjuku!
It's nice to be able to rest while avoiding direct sunlight and rain. It also functions as a place to take shelter from the rain in Shinjuku!

Those who usually come to Shinjuku are probably familiar with this place.
That's because this resting area has been around for over 10 years now... It's a surprisingly historic resting spot in Shinjuku.
The space is large, so it's also convenient when families with children want to take a break in Shinjuku♪

Moreover, the resting area is well-equipped with plants, so it doesn't feel bleak even though it's surrounded by concrete.
The wooden benches are also kept in a clean condition, making them easy to use.
I think it's a very relaxing resting place in Shinjuku.

Smoking, using the space for long periods of time, and sleeping are prohibited.

It's close to the Miraina Tower ticket gate and the Southern Terrace ticket gate, making it ideal for meeting up or taking a break in Shinjuku.
Furthermore, I think it's also useful as a place to eat lunchboxes in Shinjuku.
Actually, when I visited around lunchtime, there were quite a few people eating lunchboxes there.
As for the congestion situation, it's popular because it's close to Shinjuku Station and well-known.
However, it seems unlikely that it will be full because there are many seats.
So, why not use it as a place to rest in the Shinjuku area?
