From the second floor, you'll find the east exit leading to an elevated artificial ground plaza in front of the station, where stone benches are scattered around.
While they might not be the most comfortable, there are about 35 seats available.
This second-floor artificial ground connects the Shimonoseki Station building and the commercial facility Sea Mall Shimonoseki in front of the station.
Shimonoseki Station has the highest number of passengers in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Although it has been associated with unfortunate events like the random killing in 1999 and the arson attack on the station building in 2006, it was reborn in 2014 with a new station building.
The triangular roof, which was once a symbol of Shimonoseki Station, has been recreated in the glass section of the station building.
